Escutcheons are more commonly known as keyhole covers. Usually supplied in pairs, escutcheons are an item of door furniture which surround the keyhole on a key locking door. Unlike door handles on lock backplate, escutcheons are required if you have installed door handles on rose to an internal key locking door. Utility, bedroom, study and closet doors may require a key lock if you’re intention is to increase security and limit access to these rooms.

Escutcheons will need to be installed below the handle lever to conceal the lock and any rough edges caused as a result of the lock installation. The purpose of escutcheons, or keyhole covers, is to provide a neat finish to the overall look of a door. Escutcheons also provide protection from damage as key insertion and high frequency of turning action within the doors’ key lock mechanism can cause general wear and tear.
